Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एष हि प्रथमो धर्म: क्षत्रियस्याभिषेचनम् ।
येन शक्यं महाप्राज्ञ प्रजानां परिपालनम् ॥ ॥२-१०६-१९॥
Eṣa hi prathamo dharmaḥ kṣatriyasyābhiṣecanam । Yena śakyaṃ mahāprājña prajānāṃ paripālanam ॥ ॥2-106-19॥
Translation
O greatly wise one, the primary duty of a Kshatriya is indeed coronation, by which the protection of the subjects becomes possible.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाप्राज्ञ! क्षत्रिय का सबसे पहला (मुख्य) धर्म राज्याभिषेक ही है, जिसके द्वारा वह प्रजा का सम्यक पालन करने में समर्थ होता है।
English Commentary
Bharata establishes the hierarchy of duties for a warrior-prince. He asserts that Abhishechanam (coronation) is not a right or a privilege, but the Prathamo Dharmaḥ (first and foremost duty) of a Kshatriya. Why? Because without the legitimate power invested by the throne, Prajānāṃ paripālanam (protection of the subjects) is impossible. Bharata appeals to Rama’s intellect (Mahāprājña), suggesting that renouncing the crown is actually a dereliction of his primary professional and spiritual duty as a protector.

भरत राम को 'महाप्राज्ञ' (विशाल बुद्धि वाला) कहकर सम्बोधित करते हैं और याद दिलाते हैं कि क्षत्रिय के लिए 'अभिषेचन' (राज्याभिषेक) कोई भोग विलास नहीं, बल्कि 'प्रथम धर्म' है। बिना सत्ता और शक्ति के 'प्रजा-पालन' संभव नहीं है। यदि राम वास्तव में धर्म करना चाहते हैं, तो वह धर्म प्रजा की रक्षा है, जो केवल सिंहासन पर बैठकर ही हो सकती है, वन में बैठकर नहीं। भरत यहाँ 'राजधर्म' को 'पितृ-आज्ञा' से ऊपर रख रहे हैं।
