धर्मबन्धेन बद्धो ऽस्मि तेनेमां नेह मातरम् ।
हन्मि तीव्रेण दण्डेन दण्डार्हां पापकारिणीम् ॥ ॥२-१०६-९॥
Dharmabandhena baddho 'smi tenemāṃ neha mātaram । Hanmi tīvreṇa daṇḍena daṇḍārhāṃ pāpakāriṇīm ॥ ॥2-106-9॥
Translation
I am bound by the bond of Dharma; that is why I do not kill this sinful mother, who deserves punishment, with a severe penalty right here.

मैं धर्म के बंधन से बंधा हूँ, इसीलिए मैं इस पापचारिणी और दंड के योग्य माता का, इसी क्षण तीव्र दंड देकर वध नहीं कर रहा हूँ।
English Commentary
This is one of the most powerful and shocking verses spoken by Bharata. He admits to a rage so intense that he contemplates matricide. He explicitly states that Kaikeyi is daṇḍārhā (deserving of punishment) and pāpakāriṇī (sinful). The only restraint is Dharmabandha (the bond of righteousness)—specifically the severe prohibition against killing one's mother in Vedic Dharma. By using the phrase "I do not kill" (na hanmi), he reveals the violence of his emotions to prove his loyalty to Rama. He wants Rama to know that filial affection for Kaikeyi has completely vanished; only ethical duty remains.

यह श्लोक भरत के हृदय में जल रही क्रोधाग्नि की तीव्रता को प्रकट करता है। 'हन्मि' (मैं मार डालता) शब्द का प्रयोग अत्यंत उग्र है। भरत कहते हैं कि कैकेयी 'दण्डार्हां' (दंड के योग्य) है, किन्तु 'धर्मबन्ध' (माता की हत्या का महापाप और राम की मर्यादा) उन्हें रोक रहा है। यह परशुराम और भरत के अंतर को भी स्पष्ट करता है—परशुराम ने पिता की आज्ञा से माता का वध किया था, किन्तु भरत धर्मसंकट में फँसे हैं। वे राम को यह विश्वास दिलाना चाहते हैं कि वे अपनी माँ के प्रति तनिक भी सहानुभूति नहीं रखते, केवल धर्म ही उन्हें रोके हुए है।
