गत: स नृपतिस्तत्र गन्तव्यं यत्र तेन वै ।
प्रवृत्तिरेषा मर्त्त्यानां त्वं तु मिथ्या विहन्यसे ॥२-१०८-१२॥
Gataḥ sa nṛpatistatra gantavyaṃ yatra tena vai |
Pravṛttireṣā marttyānāṃ tvaṃ tu mithyā vihanyase ॥2-108-12॥
Translation
That King has gone where he was destined to go (died). This is the nature/fate of mortals. But you are destroying yourself (suffering) for a false notion.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे राजा (दशरथ) वहीं चले गए जहाँ उन्हें जाना था (अर्थात मृत्यु/विनाश को)। मरणशील प्राणियों की यही गति (स्वभाव) है। किन्तु तुम व्यर्थ ही (मिथ्या भाव से) कष्ट उठा रहे हो।
English Commentary
Jabali asserts the finality of death. "He has gone where he had to go" implies simple extinction or the natural course of mortality, devoid of mystical journeys to heaven or hell. He tells Rama that suffering for the dead is 'Mithya' (false/illusory behavior). Since the dead cannot perceive or receive our actions, Rama's penance serves no purpose. Jabali frames Rama's adherence to truth not as a virtue, but as self-flagellation based on a misunderstanding of reality. He urges Rama to accept death as a natural end and move on.

जाबालि मृत्यु को जीवन का स्वाभाविक अंत मानते हैं, किसी दूसरी दुनिया का द्वार नहीं। 'गतः सः' (वह चले गए)—अर्थात अब उनका अस्तित्व समाप्त है। वे राम से कहते हैं कि मृत्यु अपरिहार्य है, इस पर शोक करना या इसके कारण अपने जीवन को नष्ट करना 'मिथ्या' (Falsehood) है। 'विहन्यसे' का अर्थ है अपने आप को चोट पहुँचाना या नष्ट करना। जाबालि का तर्क है: जो मर गया वह वापस नहीं आएगा और उसे तुम्हारे कष्टों से कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता, इसलिए जीवित व्यक्ति को अपने सुख का त्याग नहीं करना चाहिए।
