अष्टका पितृदैवत्यमित्ययं प्रसृतो जन: ।
अन्नस्योपद्रवं पश्य मृतो हि किमशिष्यति ॥२-१०८-१४॥
Aṣṭakā pitṛdaivatyamityayaṃ prasṛto janaḥ |
Annasyopadravaṃ paśya mṛto hi kimaśiṣyati ॥2-108-14॥
Translation
"The Ashtaka rites are for the ancestors/deities"—these ideas have been spread by people. Look at the waste of food! Indeed, what will a dead man eat?

'अष्टका आदि श्राद्ध पितरों के लिए है'—ऐसी बातें लोगों ने फैला रखी हैं। (वास्तव में) अन्न का यह नाश (बर्बादी) देखो! भला, जो मर चुका है, वह क्या खाएगा?
English Commentary
Jabali mocks the specific ritual of Ashtaka Shraddha (offerings made to ancestors). He dismisses it as a popular delusion ("Prasrito janah" - spread by common people). He explicitly calls rituals a "waste of food" (Annasya upadravam). His argument relies on sensory evidence: a dead body is destroyed; it cannot eat. Therefore, offering food to fire or Brahmins in the name of the dead is illogical. By undermining the validity of Shraddha, he undermines the very foundation of the "debt" Rama feels he owes to Dasharatha.

जाबालि अब वैदिक कर्मकांडों, विशेषकर श्राद्ध (Ancestral worship), पर सीधा प्रहार करते हैं। 'अष्टका' पितरों के लिए किया जाने वाला एक विशेष श्राद्ध है। जाबालि इसे 'अन्नस्य उपद्रवम्' (अन्न की बर्बादी) कहते हैं। उनका तर्क पूरी तरह तर्कवादी (Rationalist) है: मृत शरीर जलकर राख हो गया, आत्मा का अस्तित्व संदिग्ध है, तो भौतिक भोजन उसे कैसे मिल सकता है? वे इसे अंधविश्वास मानते हैं। यह राम को यह समझाने के लिए है कि 'पितृ-ऋण' चुकाने की अवधारणा ही झूठी है।
