उद्विजन्ते यथा सर्प्पान्नरादनृतवादिन: ।
धर्म: सत्यं परो लोके मूलं स्वर्गस्य चोच्यते ॥ ॥२-१०९-१२॥
udvijante yathā sarppānnarādanṛtavādinaḥ । dharmaḥ satyaṃ paro loke mūlaṃ svargasya cocyate ॥ ॥2-109-12॥
Translation
People shrink away from a liar just as they do from a serpent. In this world, Truth is the supreme Dharma and is said to be the root of Heaven.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जिस प्रकार लोग सांप से डरते हैं, उसी प्रकार वे झूठ बोलने वाले व्यक्ति से भयभीत रहते हैं (उसे त्याग देते हैं)। इस लोक में सत्य ही परम धर्म है और इसे ही स्वर्ग का मूल कहा जाता है।
English Commentary
Sri Rama uses a powerful simile here, comparing a liar to a snake. Just as the presence of a snake evokes fear and distrust because of its unpredictable and venomous nature, a person who speaks untruth becomes a source of anxiety for society. Trust is the currency of social interaction, and falsehood bankrupts a man’s character. Furthermore, Rama defines Truth as the highest duty (Paramo Dharma) and the root foundation of Heaven. This refutes the utilitarian view that actions should be judged solely by their material results. Rama posits that the metaphysical destination (Heaven) is causally linked to ethical conduct (Truth) in the present. To abandon truth is to uproot oneself from the path to beatitude.

यहाँ श्री राम झूठ की तुलना विषैले सर्प से करते हैं। जैसे सर्प का कोई भरोसा नहीं होता और वह कभी भी डस सकता है, वैसे ही मिथ्यावादी व्यक्ति समाज के लिए घातक और अविश्वसनीय होता है। सामाजिक और नैतिक व्यवस्था 'विश्वास' पर टिकी है, और झूठ उस विश्वास को नष्ट कर देता है। राम उद्घोष करते हैं कि सत्य ही धर्म का सार है। यदि धर्म वृक्ष है, तो सत्य उसकी जड़ है; यदि स्वर्ग लक्ष्य है, तो सत्य उसका मार्ग है। जाबालि ने धर्म को व्यर्थ बताया था, किन्तु राम सिद्ध करते हैं कि बिना सत्य के न तो इस लोक में प्रतिष्ठा मिलती है और न ही परलोक में सद्गति। एक राजा के रूप में राम के लिए प्रजा का विश्वास (जो सत्य पर आधारित है) ही सबसे बड़ी शक्ति है।
