नैव लोभान्न मोहाद्वा न ह्यज्ञानात्तमोन्वित: ।
सेतुं सत्यस्य भेत्स्यामि गुरो: सत्यप्रतिश्रव: ॥ ॥२-१०९-१७॥
naiva lobhānna mohādvā na hyajñānāttamonvitaḥ । setuṃ satyasya bhetsyāmi guroḥ satyapratiśravaḥ ॥ ॥2-109-17॥
Translation
Neither out of greed, nor out of delusion, nor out of ignorance shrouded in darkness, will I break the bridge of Truth. I have given my true promise to my Guru (father).
हिंदी अनुवाद
न लोभ से, न मोह से और न ही अज्ञान (अंधकार) से ग्रस्त होकर मैं सत्य के सेतु (मर्यादा) को तोड़ूँगा। मैंने गुरु (पिता) से सत्य की प्रतिज्ञा की है।
English Commentary
Rama explicitly rejects the motivations that Jabali implicitly appealed to: greed (lobha) for the kingdom, delusion (moha) regarding worldly attachments, and ignorance (ajnana). He uses the metaphor of a "bridge" (setu) for Truth. A bridge connects two shores and allows safe passage; breaking it leads to chaos and destruction. Rama views the pledge to his father not as a burden, but as a protective structure of Dharma. By referring to his father as Guru, he invokes the supreme spiritual authority of the teacher/parent, making the promise sacred. This verse signifies Rama's triumph over the internal enemies (shad-ripu) and his unshakeable resolve to uphold the moral order.

राम यहाँ उन सभी कारणों का निषेध करते हैं जो मनुष्य को पाप की ओर ले जाते हैं—लोभ (राज्य की लालसा), मोह (सम्बन्धियों का प्रेम), और अज्ञान। जाबालि ने राज्य-सुख का लोभ दिखाया था, लेकिन राम कहते हैं कि वे 'सत्य के सेतु' को नहीं तोड़ेंगे। सेतु (पुल) वह है जो मर्यादा बनाए रखता है और डूबने से बचाता है। यदि सत्य का सेतु टूट गया, तो धर्म की मर्यादा बह जाएगी। 'गुरो: सत्यप्रतिश्रव:'—यहाँ पिता को 'गुरु' कहकर राम ने उनके प्रति अपनी श्रद्धा और आज्ञाकारिता को और ऊँचा स्थान दिया है। यह श्लोक राम के चरित्र की दृढ़ता को दर्शाता है कि कोई भी प्रलोभन उन्हें उनके पथ से डिगा नहीं सकता।
