निर्मर्यादस्तु पुरुष: पापाचारसमन्वित: ।
मानं न लभते सत्सु भिन्नचारित्रदर्शन: ॥ ॥२-१०९-३॥
Nirmaryādastu puruṣaḥ pāpācārasamanvitaḥ । Mānaṃ na labhate satsu bhinnacāritradarśanaḥ ॥ ॥2-109-3॥
Translation
A person who transgresses moral limits, becomes involved in sinful conduct, and whose character is seen as corrupted, does not receive respect among the good.

जो पुरुष मर्यादा (नियमों/सीमाओं) को तोड़ देता है और पापाचार से युक्त हो जाता है, जिसका चरित्र भ्रष्ट हो गया है, वह सज्जन पुरुषों के बीच सम्मान नहीं पाता।
English Commentary
Rama emphasizes the concept of Maryada (moral boundaries/limits). A civilized society relies on individuals adhering to these self-imposed boundaries. Rama argues that a person who acts without restraint (nirmaryāda) and engages in sinful behavior loses all standing among the virtuous (satsu). He implies that retaining the kingdom at the cost of his integrity would strip him of true honor. For Rama, legitimacy does not come from the throne, but from unblemished character. If he breaks the pledge, he becomes a man of broken character, unworthy of respect regardless of his royal status.

यहाँ 'मर्यादा' शब्द अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। धर्म का अर्थ ही है सीमाओं और अनुशासन का पालन करना। श्रीराम कहते हैं कि यदि वे पिता के वचन की मर्यादा तोड़ते हैं, तो यह पापाचार होगा। समाज में सम्मान पद या धन से नहीं, अपितु चरित्र से मिलता है। 'भिन्नचारित्रदर्शन:' का अर्थ है वह व्यक्ति जिसने अपने सदाचार को खंडित कर दिया हो। श्रीराम जानते हैं कि राजा का सबसे बड़ा धन उसका चरित्र और विश्वसनीयता है। यदि वे आज वचन तोड़ेंगे, तो वे सत्पुरुषों (सज्जनों) की सभा में बैठने योग्य नहीं रहेंगे।
