कश्चेतयान: पुरुष: कार्याकार्यविचक्षण: ।
बहुमंस्यति मां लोके दुर्वृत्तं लोकदूषणम् ॥ ॥२-१०९-७॥
Kaścetayānaḥ puruṣaḥ kāryākāryavicakṣaṇaḥ । Bahumaṃsyati māṃ loke durvṛttaṃ lokadūṣaṇam ॥ ॥2-109-7॥
Translation
What conscious man in this world, capable of distinguishing between right and wrong actions, would respect me if I were to become a person of bad conduct and a corrupter of society?
हिंदी अनुवाद
संसार में ऐसा कौन सा चेतनाशील (बुद्धिमान) पुरुष होगा, जो कार्य और अकार्य (क्या करना चाहिए और क्या नहीं) को समझने वाला हो, और मुझ जैसे दुराचारी और लोक को दूषित करने वाले का सम्मान करेगा?
English Commentary
Rama appeals to the judgment of the wise. He asks rhetorically: who among the discerning (cetayānaḥ), those who know the difference between right and wrong, would hold him in high regard if he acted basely? He labels the act of breaking his vow not just as a personal failing, but as becoming a lokadūṣaṇam—a polluter of the world. A leader’s corruption is contagious; it stains the collective conscience of the society. Rama values the respect of the ethically awake over the applause of the opportunists.

श्रीराम लोक-निंदा या लोकप्रियता की चिंता नहीं कर रहे हैं, बल्कि वे 'विद्वानों' और 'विवेकी' जनों (चेतयान: पुरुष:) के निर्णय की बात कर रहे हैं। एक राजा के लिए यह आवश्यक है कि समाज के प्रबुद्ध वर्ग का उस पर विश्वास हो। यदि श्रीराम 'लोकदूषण' (समाज को भ्रष्ट करने वाले) बन जाते हैं, तो कोई भी समझदार व्यक्ति उनका आदर नहीं करेगा। एक राजा जो अपने वचन का पक्का नहीं है, वह अपने नागरिकों को भी अनैतिक बनने की प्रेरणा देता है। श्रीराम अपने 'उदाहरण' (Example) की शक्ति को समझते हैं।
