कस्य धास्याम्यहं वृत्तं केन वा स्वर्गमाप्नुयाम् ।
अनया वर्त्तमानो हि वृत्त्या हीनप्रतिज्ञया ॥ ॥२-१०९-८॥
Kasya dhāsyāmyahaṃ vṛttaṃ kena vā svargamāpnuyām । Anayā varttamāno hi vṛttyā hīnapratijñayā ॥ ॥2-109-8॥
Translation
If I behave according to this conduct, breaking my promise, whose example would I follow? And by what means would I attain heaven?

यदि मैं प्रतिज्ञाहीन होकर इस (जाबालि द्वारा सुझाई गई) वृत्ति से आचरण करूँ, तो मैं किसका अनुकरण करूँगा? और किसके द्वारा मैं स्वर्ग प्राप्त करूँगा?
English Commentary
Rama directly counters Jabali’s atheism by bringing the focus back to Swarga (Heaven) and exemplary conduct. He asks two critical questions: 'Whose example would I be following?' (implying he would be following the path of the wicked, not the ancestors) and 'How would I reach heaven?' Rama affirms that the path to higher realms is paved with integrity. By adopting a life of broken promises (hīnapratijñayā), he would lose his claim to spiritual elevation. This confirms Rama's worldview is rooted in Astikya (belief in cosmic order and consequences), opposing Jabali's Nastikya (nihilism).

यह श्लोक श्रीराम की पारलौकिक दृष्टि और आदर्शवादिता को दर्शाता है। जाबालि ने स्वर्ग को नकारा था, किन्तु श्रीराम उसे लक्ष्य मानते हैं। श्रीराम पूछते हैं, "मैं किसका वृत्त (चरित्र/उदाहरण) धारण करूँ?" अर्थात्, यदि मैं ही भ्रष्ट हो गया, तो मेरे पास कोई आदर्श नहीं बचेगा। भारतीय परंपरा में राजा ऋषियों और पूर्वज राजाओं के आदर्शों पर चलता है। प्रतिज्ञाहीन (हीनप्रतिज्ञया) होकर जीना क्षत्रिय के लिए मृत्यु समान है। श्रीराम यह बल देते हैं कि स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति केवल 'सत्य' और 'धर्म' से होती है, राज्य-भोग से नहीं।
