Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
बलमात्मनि जानन्ती न मां शङ्कितुमर्हसि ।
करिष्यामि तव प्रीतिं सुकृतेनापि ते शपे ॥ ॥२-११-१०॥
balamātmani jānantī na māṃ śaṅkitumarhasi । kariṣyāmi tava prītiṃ sukṛtenāpi te śape ॥ ॥2-11-10॥
Translation
Knowing the power you hold over me, you ought not to doubt me. I will do what pleases you; I swear to you even by my good deeds (spiritual merit).
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरे ऊपर अपने प्रभावित (बल) को जानती हुई तुम्हें मुझ पर शंका नहीं करनी चाहिए। मैं तुम्हारा प्रिय करूँगा, मैं अपने पुण्यों की शपथ लेकर यह कहता हूँ।
English Commentary
Dasharatha explicitly acknowledges the power dynamic in their relationship. He admits she holds sway (balam) over him, referring to his infatuation and obligation to her. He implores her to drop her suspicion (shankitum). To finalize his commitment, he raises the stakes from his earthly attachments (Rama) to his spiritual capital, swearing by his sukrita (merit accumulated through good deeds and sacrifices). In the Vedic context, risking one's spiritual merit is the ultimate guarantee of truthfulness.
हिंदी टीका
दशरथ स्वीकार करते हैं कि कैकेयी का उन पर कितना गहरा प्रभाव ('बल') है। यह 'बल' प्रेम का भी है और उस वचन का भी जो उन्होंने पहले दिया था। वे कहते हैं कि चूँकि तुम जानती हो कि मैं तुम्हारे वश में हूँ, इसलिए अविश्वास मत करो। अंत में, वे 'सुकृतेनापि' (अपने पुण्यों की) शपथ लेते हैं। भारतीय संस्कृति में अपने संचित पुण्यों की शपथ लेना बहुत बड़ी बात मानी जाती है, क्योंकि झूठी शपथ से सारे पुण्य नष्ट हो जाते हैं। दशरथ ने अब भौतिक और आध्यात्मिक दोनों तरह की शपथ ले ली है।
