Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तामुवाच महातेजाः कैकेयीमीषदुत्स्मैतः ।
कामी हस्तेन संगृह्य मूर्धजेषु शुचिस्मिताम् ॥ ॥२-११-४॥
Tāmuvāca mahātejāḥ kaikeyīmīṣadutsmayataḥ । Kāmī hastena saṃgṛhya mūrdhajeṣu śucismitām ॥ ॥2-11-4॥
Translation
Then the highly resplendent King, smiling slightly, caught the bright-smiling Kaikeyi by her hair (affectionately) and the lover spoke to her.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब उस महातेजस्वी और कामी राजा ने, जो (प्रेमवश) थोड़ा मुस्कुरा रहे थे, उस पवित्र मुस्कान वाली (कैकेयी) के बालों को हाथ से पकड़कर कहा।
English Commentary
The dramatic irony is painful here. Dasharatha is smiling lightly (īṣadutsmayataḥ), thinking this is a playful romantic interlude. He touches her hair affectionately, playing the role of the Kāmī (lover). He interprets her demand for a vow as a coquettish game. He sees her as śucismitām (one with a bright/pure smile), completely misreading her triumphant smirk as an affectionate smile. He walks into his doom with a smile on his face, confident in his power, blind to his fate.
हिंदी टीका
दशरथ की अज्ञानता यहाँ चरम पर है। वे 'ईषदुत्स्मयतः' (मंद-मंद मुस्कुराते हुए) हैं। उन्हें लग रहा है कि यह केवल एक प्रेमी-प्रेमिका का खेल है। वे स्नेहपूर्वक उसके बाल ('मूर्धजेषु') पकड़ते हैं, जो अंतरंगता का प्रतीक है। कैकेयी को 'शुचिस्मिताम्' (पवित्र/उज्ज्वल मुस्कान वाली) कहा गया है—शायद इसलिए कि वह अपनी योजना की सफलता पर मुस्कुरा रही है, और राजा उसे प्रेम समझ रहे हैं। 'महातेजाः' (महान तेजस्वी) विशेषण यहाँ राजा की शक्ति और उनकी वर्तमान विवशता के बीच के अंतर को और गहरा करता है।
