Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आत्मना वात्मजैश्चान्यैर्वृणे यं मनुजर्षभम् ।
तेन रामेण कैकेयि शपे ते वचनक्रियाम् ॥ ॥२-११-८॥
ātmanā vātmajaiścānyairvṛṇe yaṃ manujarṣabham । tena rāmeṇa kaikeyi śape te vacanakriyām ॥ ॥2-11-8॥
Translation
O Kaikeyi! I swear to fulfill your word by that Rama, the bull among men, whom I choose over myself and my other sons.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे कैकेयी! मैं अपने आप से और अन्य पुत्रों (भरत आदि) से भी बढ़कर जिस पुरुषश्रेष्ठ राम का वरण करता हूँ (चाहता हूँ), उसी राम की शपथ लेकर मैं तुम्हारी बात पूरी करने की प्रतिज्ञा करता हूँ।
English Commentary
Dasharatha establishes a hierarchy of affection where Rama sits at the apex, above the King's own self and his other sons (Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna). By stating he "chooses" (vṛṇe) Rama above all else, he highlights Rama's unique position as Manujarshabha (best among men). The repetition of the oath indicates his desperation. He is trying to cover all bases—his life, his other children, and his own soul—to convince Kaikeyi that he will grant her wish, tragically unaware that her wish targets the very subject of his oath.

दशरथ यहाँ तुलनात्मक रूप से राम के प्रति अपने प्रेम की सर्वोच्चता स्थापित करते हैं। वे स्पष्ट कहते हैं कि वे स्वयं से ('आत्मना') और भरत, लक्ष्मण तथा शत्रुघ्न ('आत्मजैश्चान्यैः') से भी अधिक राम को चाहते हैं। 'मनुजर्षभम्' (पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ) शब्द राम की अद्वितीयता को दर्शाता है। राजा दशरथ बार-बार राम की शपथ इसलिए ले रहे हैं ताकि कैकेयी के मन में लेशमात्र भी संदेह न रहे। वे हर संभव तरीके से, हर रिश्ते से ऊपर राम को रखकर, कैकेयी को अपना संकल्प दिखा रहे हैं।
