युवनाश्वसुत: श्रीमान् मान्धाता समपद्यत ।
मान्धातुस्तु महातेजा: सुसन्धिरुदपद्यत ॥२-११०-१३॥
Yuvanāśvasutaḥ śrīmān māndhātā samapadyata । Māndhātustu mahātejāḥ susandhirudapadyata ॥2-110-13॥
Translation
The illustrious Mandhata was born as the son of Yuvanashva. And from Mandhata, the highly radiant Susandhi was born.
हिंदी अनुवाद
युवनाश्व के पुत्र श्रीमान् 'मान्धाता' हुए। और मान्धाता से महातेजस्वी 'सुसन्धि' उत्पन्न हुए।
English Commentary
Mandhata is one of the quintessential Chakravartins (Universal Monarchs) of Vedic lore. His birth legend is miraculous (born from his father Yuvanashva after the latter accidentally drank consecrated water) and he was nursed by Indra himself. Mandhata’s empire is said to have covered the entire earth illuminated by the sun. By naming him, Vasistha sets a benchmark for imperial greatness that Rama is expected to uphold. He is succeeded by Susandhi.

मान्धाता भारतीय इतिहास के सबसे महान चक्रवर्ती राजाओं में गिने जाते हैं। कहा जाता है कि सूर्य जहाँ से उगता है और जहाँ अस्त होता है, वह सारा क्षेत्र मान्धाता का ही था ("यावत् सूर्य उदेति... सर्वं तन्मान्धातुः क्षेत्रमुच्यते"). युवनाश्व ने अनजाने में अभिमंत्रित जल पी लिया था जिससे मान्धाता का जन्म हुआ, और देवराज इन्द्र ने उन्हें अपनी तर्जनी उंगली चुसाई (माम् धास्यति - यह मुझे पियेगा), इसलिए उनका नाम मान्धाता पड़ा। वसिष्ठ यहाँ राम को उस सर्वोच्च सत्ता का स्मरण दिला रहे हैं जो उनके वंश में निहित है।
