स तु राममवेक्षन्तं सुमन्त्रं प्रेक्ष्य दुर्मना: ।
कुशोत्तरमुपस्थाप्य भूमावेवास्तरत् स्वयम् ॥ ॥२-१११-१५॥
Sa tu rāmamavekṣantaṃ sumantraṃ prekṣya durmanāḥ । Kuśottaramupasthāpya bhūmāvevāstarat svayam ॥ ॥2-111-15॥
Translation
Seeing Sumantra looking at Rama (for permission), the distressed Bharata brought the spread of Kusha grass and spread it on the ground himself.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(भरत की आज्ञा सुनकर) सुमन्त्र राम की ओर देखने लगे। सुमन्त्र को (राम के संकेत की प्रतीक्षा में) देखते हुए उदास मन वाले भरत ने स्वयं ही कुशा लाकर भूमि पर बिछा ली।
English Commentary
This verse captures a poignant moment of hesitation and resolve. Sumantra, the loyal charioteer, is caught between two princes. Though ordered by Bharata (the reigning representative), he looks to Rama (rāmamavekṣantaṃ) for silent approval, knowing that Bharata’s plan to fast unto death is drastic and perhaps inappropriate. Bharata, perceiving this hesitation and driven by his distressed state (durmanāḥ), bypasses protocol. He does not wait for the servant but spreads the Kusha grass himself (svayam). This act signifies that Bharata has moved beyond royal formalities; his urgency is such that he will perform menial tasks to initiate his penance immediately, signaling to Rama that his resolve is independent of anyone's assistance.

यह श्लोक सुमन्त्र की धर्मसंकट और भरत की व्यग्रता का सजीव चित्रण है। सुमन्त्र राजा दशरथ के मंत्री हैं और राम के प्रति निष्ठावान हैं। भरत की 'प्रत्युपवेशन' की आज्ञा सुनकर वे हिचकिचाते हैं और राम की स्वीकृति के लिए उनकी ओर देखते हैं ('राममवेक्षन्तं'), क्योंकि क्षत्रिय कुमार के लिए ऐसा करना उचित नहीं है। भरत समझ जाते हैं कि सुमन्त्र राम के भय या संकोच से आज्ञा का पालन नहीं कर पा रहे हैं। अतः, वे स्वयं ('स्वयम्') कुश बिछाकर लेट जाते हैं। यह भरत की तत्कालीन मानसिक स्थिति को दर्शाता है—वे अब किसी की प्रतीक्षा या सहायता के मोहताज नहीं हैं। उनका यह कार्य राम पर दबाव को और अधिक बढ़ा देता है।
