Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तमुवाच महातेजा रामो राजर्षिसत्तम: ।
किं मां भरत कुर्वाणं तात प्रत्युपवेक्ष्यसि ॥ ॥२-१११-१६॥
Tamuvāca mahātejā rāmo rājarṣisattamaḥ । Kiṃ māṃ bharata kurvāṇaṃ tāta pratyupveṣyasi ॥ ॥2-111-16॥
Translation
Then, the greatly resplendent Rama, the best among Royal Sages, spoke to him: "O dear Bharata, what have I done (wrong) that you sit in Pratyupaveshana against me?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब महातेजस्वी और राजर्षियों में श्रेष्ठ राम ने भरत से कहा—"हे तात भरत! मैं (धर्म का) पालन कर रहा हूँ, फिर मेरे विरुद्ध तुम यह 'प्रत्युपवेशन' (हठ/धरना) क्यों कर रहे हो?"
English Commentary
Rama is described here as Rājarṣisattamaḥ (the best of royal sages), implying his response stems from wisdom and kingly duty rather than mere emotion. He questions the validity of Bharata's protest. Pratyupaveshana is a tactic used against those who have violated Dharma or failed to repay a debt. Rama asks, "What am I doing?" implying that he is merely fulfilling his righteous duty (Dharma) by obeying their father. Therefore, Bharata's protest is misplaced. Rama challenges the moral premise of Bharata's fast: one cannot rightfully stage a hunger strike against someone who is strictly adhering to the truth. Rama’s tone is one of corrective authority mixed with brotherly affection (tāta).

श्रीराम यहाँ 'राजर्षिसत्तम:' (राजर्षियों में श्रेष्ठ) के रूप में संबोधित किए गए हैं, जो यह दर्शाता है कि वे स्थिति को केवल भावनात्मक नहीं, अपितु धर्म और नीति की दृष्टि से देख रहे हैं। राम भरत के इस कृत्य से विस्मित और कुछ हद तक क्षुब्ध हैं। वे पूछते हैं कि मैंने ऐसा क्या अपराध किया है जिसके लिए तुम मुझे दंडित कर रहे हो?
