धर्मात्मा तस्य तथ्येन भ्रातुर्वाक्येन विस्मित: ।
उवाच राम: सम्प्रेक्ष्य पौरजानपदं जनम् ॥ ॥२-१११-२७॥
Dharmātmā tasya tathyena bhrāturvākyena vismitaḥ । Uvāca rāmaḥ samprekṣya paurajānapadaṃ janam ॥ ॥2-111-27॥
Translation
The righteous-souled (Rama), astonished by that sincere/truthful speech of his brother, spoke, looking at the people of the city and the country.

अपने भाई (भरत) के उस यथार्थ (सच्चे/निष्कपट) वचन से विस्मित होकर, धर्मात्मा राम ने पुरवासियों और जानपद लोगों की ओर देखकर कहा।
English Commentary
Rama is struck with wonder (vismitaḥ) at Bharata's proposal. The text describes Bharata's words as tathyena—rooted in truth and sincerity. Rama recognizes the genuineness of Bharata’s offer to swap lives. However, as a Dharmātmā (righteous soul), Rama must adjudicate this offer based on Dharma, not emotion. He addresses the citizens again to deliver a public ruling on this novel proposal. This moment underscores Rama's role not just as a brother but as a strict interpreter of the moral law; he validates Bharata's intent but prepares to dismantle the feasibility of his offer.

राम भरत के प्रस्ताव से 'विस्मित:' (आश्चर्यचकित) हैं। यद्यपि प्रस्ताव अव्यवहारिक है, किन्तु उसके पीछे की 'तथ्येन' (सच्चाई/निष्ठा) ने राम को द्रवित कर दिया है। राम जानते हैं कि भरत यह नाटक नहीं कर रहे, वे वास्तव में वन जाने को तत्पर हैं। राम 'धर्मात्मा' हैं, इसलिए वे भावुकता में बहकर नियम नहीं तोड़ सकते, लेकिन भाई के प्रेम का सम्मान करते हैं। वे पुनः प्रजा ('पौरजानपदं जनम्') की ओर मुड़ते हैं ताकि उनका उत्तर केवल भरत को नहीं, बल्कि पूरी सभा को मिले। राम अब एक न्यायाधीश की भाँति इस प्रस्ताव की वैधानिक समीक्षा करेंगे।
