वृद्धाया धर्मशीलाया मातुर्नार्हस्यवर्त्तितुम् ।
अस्यास्तु वचनं कुर्वन् नातिवर्त्ते: सताङ्गतिम् ॥ ॥२-१११-६॥
Vṛddhāyā dharmaśīlāyā māturnārhasyavarttitum । Asyāstu vacanaṃ kurvan nātivartteḥ satāṅgatim ॥ ॥2-111-6॥
Translation
You ought not to disobey your aged and righteous mother. By following her command, you will not be transgressing the path of the righteous.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम्हें अपनी बूढ़ी और धर्मपरायण माता (कौशल्या) की आज्ञा का उल्लंघन नहीं करना चाहिए। इनका वचन मानते हुए तुम सज्जनों के मार्ग से च्युत नहीं होगे।
English Commentary
Vasistha invokes the matriarchal authority. He describes Kaushalya as aged and rooted in Dharma, making her worthy of absolute obedience. In the conflict of commands between parents, Vasistha suggests that adhering to the mother's wish (to return and rule) is a valid moral choice that preserves one's standing in Dharma. This argument targets Rama's compassion and his duty as a son to protect and serve his mother, who has been grievously wronged by the exile. Vasistha assures him that prioritizing the living, suffering mother over the deceased father's vow is a righteous act.
हिंदी टीका
वशिष्ठ जी अब तीसरे गुरु—माता—की बात करते हैं। कौशल्या 'वृद्धा' और 'धर्मशीला' हैं, अर्थात वे पूजनीय हैं और उनका दुख वास्तविक है। शास्त्रों में माता का स्थान पिता से भी ऊँचा माना गया है (उपाध्यायान् दशाचार्यः आचार्याणां शतं पिता। सहस्रं तु पितृन् माता गौरवेण अतिरिच्यते - मनुस्मृति)। यदि पिता ने वन जाने को कहा, और माता ने रोकने को (जैसा कि कौशल्या ने प्रारंभ में किया था और अब भी चाहती हैं), तो माता की बात मानना धर्म विरुद्ध नहीं है। वशिष्ठ राम की कोमल भावनाओं को स्पर्श कर रहे हैं, यह बताते हुए कि माता को सुख देना भी धर्म का ही अंग है।
