Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स पादुके सम्प्रणम्य रामं वचनमब्रवीत् ।
चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि जटाचीरधरो ह्यहम् ॥ ॥२-११२-२३॥
Sa pāduke sampraṇamya rāmaṃ vacanamabravīt । Caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi jaṭācīradharo hyaham ॥ ॥2-112-23॥
Translation
Bowing to those sandals, Bharata spoke these words to Rama: "For fourteen years, I too shall wear matted locks and bark garments."

उन पादुकाओं को प्रणाम करके भरत ने राम से यह वचन कहा— "मैं भी चौदह वर्षों तक जटा और वल्कल (पेड़ की छाल) धारण किए रहूँगा।"
English Commentary
Upon receiving the sandals, Bharata immediately lays down the terms of his own existence for the next fourteen years. He bows to the sandals (sampraṇamya), acknowledging them as his superior. Then he declares his intent to mirror Rama’s lifestyle exactly: wearing matted hair (jaṭā) and tree bark (cīra). This is an extraordinary act of solidarity. Bharata refuses to enjoy the privileges of royalty while his brother suffers in the forest. By adopting the ascetic code while acting as an administrator, Bharata redefines the concept of kingship as a sacrificial duty (Yajna) rather than a position of enjoyment (Bhoga).

पादुकाएं प्राप्त करने के बाद, भरत अपनी प्रतिज्ञा (भीष्म संकल्प) लेते हैं। वे कहते हैं, "जटाचीरधरो ह्यहम्" (मैं जटा और वल्कल धारण करूँगा)। इसका अर्थ है कि भले ही वे अयोध्या में रहेंगे, लेकिन वे एक राजा का जीवन नहीं, बल्कि एक वनवासी तपस्वी का जीवन जिएंगे। यह राम के साथ पूर्ण तादात्म्य (solidarity) है। भरत यह सहन नहीं कर सकते कि उनका बड़ा भाई वन में कष्ट सहे और वे महलों में सुख भोगें। यह "प्रत्यानीक" त्याग है—सुख उपलब्ध होते हुए भी उसका त्याग करना। भरत ने यह स्पष्ट कर दिया कि वे राज्य का भोग नहीं करेंगे, केवल उसकी रक्षा करेंगे।
