फलमूलाशनो वीर भवेयं रघुनन्दन ।
तवागमनमाकांक्षन् वसन् वै नगराद्बहि: ॥ ॥२-११२-२४॥
Phalamūlāśano vīra bhaveyaṃ raghunandana । Tavāgamanamākāṃkṣan vasan vai nagarādbahiḥ ॥ ॥2-112-24॥
Translation
O Hero, O delighter of the Raghus! Eating only fruits and roots, and waiting for your return, I shall indeed dwell outside the city.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वीर रघुनन्दन! मैं फल-मूल का भोजन करता हुआ और आपके आगमन की प्रतीक्षा करता हुआ नगर से बाहर निवास करूँगा।
English Commentary
Bharata continues to delineate his austere vow. He will subsist only on fruits and roots (phalamūlāśanaḥ), rejecting royal cuisine. Furthermore, he explicitly states he will live nagarādbahiḥ (outside the city). This reinforces that he does not consider himself the King of Ayodhya. He is physically distancing himself from the throne to avoid even the appearance of usurpation. His life will have a singular focus: tavāgamanamākāṃkṣan (longing/waiting for your return). This establishes the setting for Bharata’s residence in Nandigram, where he acts as a hermit-trustee of the kingdom, waiting for the rightful owner to return.

भरत अपनी तपस्या का विवरण और बढ़ाते हैं। वे केवल वेशभूषा ही नहीं, बल्कि आहार में भी राम का अनुसरण करेंगे—'फलमूलाशनो' (फल और कंदमूल खाने वाले)। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण निर्णय है 'वसन् वै नगराद्बहि:' (नगर के बाहर निवास करूँगा)। भरत अयोध्या की राज-गद्दी या राजमहल में प्रवेश करने से इनकार कर देते हैं। यह नंदीग्राम में उनके निवास का आधार बनता है। वे एक पहरेदार की तरह नगर के बाहर रहेंगे, 'तवागमनमाकांक्षन्' (आपकी वापसी की प्रतीक्षा करते हुए)। यह श्लोक भरत के चरित्र की शुद्धता को दर्शाता है—वे राज्य को एक 'न्यास' (trust) मान रहे हैं, अपनी संपत्ति नहीं।
