Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पितु: प्रतिज्ञां तामेव पालयिष्यामि तत्त्वत: ।
चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि या प्रतिज्ञा पितुर्मम ॥ ॥२-११३-१०॥
Pituḥ pratijñāṃ tāmeva pālayiṣyāmi tattvataḥ |
Caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi yā pratijñā piturmama ॥2-113-10॥
Translation
"I shall fulfill that very pledge of my father in letter and spirit. Since the pledge made by my father specifies fourteen years, I shall abide by it."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं पिता की उसी प्रतिज्ञा का यथार्थ रूप से पालन करूँगा। मेरे पिता की जो प्रतिज्ञा है, वह चौदह वर्षों की है (अतः मैं चौदह वर्ष वन में ही रहूँगा)।"
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the foundational ethos of Rama's character: unyielding adherence to truth. Rama declares he will fulfill the vow 'tattvataḥ' (in reality/essence), meaning he will not look for loopholes to shorten the term or modify the conditions. He accepts the fourteen years as absolute. This demonstrates the highest form of Dharma, where a son sacrifices a kingdom to preserve his father's integrity. Bharata conveys to the sage that Rama's refusal was not born of stubbornness, but of a supreme moral obligation to their father's word.

यह श्लोक राम के चरित्र की आधारशिला है—'रघुकुल रीत सदा चली आई, प्राण जाई पर वचन न जाई'। राम यहाँ स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वे 'तत्त्वत:' (यथार्थ रूप से, या जैसा कहा गया है वैसा ही) पालन करेंगे। वे शब्दों की बाजीगरी करके वनवास के समय को कम नहीं करना चाहते। यह धर्म का कठोरतम रूप है जहाँ पुत्र अपने पिता के सत्य की रक्षा के लिए राजपाट त्याग देता है। भरत ऋषि को बता रहे हैं कि राम ने किस आधार पर लौटने से मना किया—वह आधार केवल धर्म और पितृ-आज्ञा थी।
