एवमुक्त: स तु ततो भरद्वाजेन धीमता ।
प्रत्युवाच भरद्वाजं भरतो भ्रातृवत्सल: ॥ ॥२-११३-८॥
Evamuktaḥ sa tu tatō bharadvājena dhīmatā |
Pratyuvāca bharadvājaṃ bharatō bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ॥2-113-8॥
Translation
Thus addressed by the wise Bharadwaja, Bharata, who was devoted to his brother, replied to the sage.
हिंदी अनुवाद
बुद्धिमान भरद्वाज मुनि के ऐसा कहने पर, भ्रातृ-प्रेमी भरत ने भरद्वाज जी को (इस प्रकार) उत्तर दिया।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses specific epithets here with great intent. Bharadwaja is called 'dhimata' (wise), implying that he understands the intricacies of destiny, yet follows protocol by asking. Bharata is described as 'bhrātṛvatsalaḥ' (lover of his brother). This is crucial because, even though Bharata returns without Rama, his defining characteristic remains his devotion. It suggests that his acceptance of Rama's order to return is, in itself, an act of brotherly love. His reply stems from devotion rather than political failure.

इस श्लोक में वाल्मीकि जी ने दो विशेषणों का प्रयोग बहुत सधे हुए ढंग से किया है। भरद्वाज के लिए 'धीमता' (बुद्धिमान) और भरत के लिए 'भ्रातृवत्सल:' (भाई से प्रेम करने वाले)। भरद्वाज 'धीमान' हैं क्योंकि वे जानते हैं कि नियति को टाला नहीं जा सकता, फिर भी वे प्रश्न करते हैं। दूसरी ओर, भरत का परिचय यहाँ 'भ्रातृवत्सल' के रूप में दिया गया है, जो यह संकेत देता है कि यद्यपि वे राम को वन से वापस लाने में असफल रहे, परन्तु उनका यह प्रयास उनके अगाध भ्रातृ-प्रेम का ही प्रमाण था। उनका उत्तर एक भक्त का उत्तर है, न कि केवल एक राजकुमार का।
