Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सम्मूढनिगमां स्तब्धां संक्षिप्तविपणापणाम् ।
प्रच्छन्नशशिनक्षत्रां द्यामिवाम्बुधरैर्वृताम् ॥ ॥२-११४-१३॥
Sammūḍhanigamāṃ stabdhāṃ saṃkṣiptavipaṇāpaṇām |
Pracchannaśaśinakṣatrāṃ dyāmivāmbudharairvṛtām ॥2-114-13॥
Translation
(Ayodhya looked) like the sky covered with clouds, hiding the moon and stars. Its marketplaces were desolate, activity was paralyzed (stunned), and the shops and trading centers were closed/shrunk.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(अयोध्या ऐसी लग रही थी) जैसे बादलों से ढका हुआ आकाश, जिसमें चन्द्रमा और तारे छिप गए हों। नगर के बाजार (निगम) सूने (सम्मूढ) थे, सब कुछ स्तब्ध था, और दुकानें तथा क्रय-विक्रय (विपणापण) बंद हो गए थे।
English Commentary
This verse describes the paralysis of civic and commercial life. The 'nigama' (corporations/markets) are 'sammūḍha' (confused/inactive), and trade is 'saṃkṣipta' (curtailed/shrunk). It depicts a city in total lockdown due to mourning. The simile of the sky covered by clouds ('ambudharairvṛtām') hiding the moon and stars reinforces the idea of gloom obscuring the city's lights. The word 'stabdhāṃ' (stunned/paralyzed) perfectly captures the atmosphere of a populace in collective shock.

यहाँ नगर की आर्थिक और सामाजिक गतिविधि के ठप होने का वर्णन है। 'निगम' (व्यापारिक मार्ग/बाजार) 'सम्मूढ' (चेतना शून्य/व्याकुल) हैं। दुकानें 'संक्षिप्त' (समेट ली गई/बंद) हैं। यह एक 'बंद' (Strike/Shutdown) जैसा दृश्य है जो शोक के कारण स्वतः हुआ है। उपमा आकाश की है—जैसे बादल चाँद-तारों को ढक लेते हैं, वैसे ही विषाद ने अयोध्या की रौनक को ढक लिया है। 'स्तब्धां' शब्द उस भारीपन को दर्शाता है जहाँ लोग सदमे (shock) में हैं और कोई गतिविधि नहीं कर रहे।
