स वल्कलजटाधारी मुनिवेषधर: प्रभु: ।
नन्दिग्रामे ऽवसद्वीर: ससैन्यो भरतस्तदा ॥२-११५-२३॥
sa valkalajaṭādhārī muniveṣadharaḥ prabhuḥ |
nandigrāme 'vasadvīraḥ sasainyo bharatastadā ॥2-115-23॥
Translation
Then, wearing bark garments and matted hair, assuming the guise of a sage, the capable and heroic Bharata dwelt in Nandigrama along with his army.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तब वल्कल वस्त्र और जटा धारण किए हुए, मुनि का वेष बनाए हुए वे समर्थ (प्रभु) वीर भरत अपनी सेना के साथ नन्दिग्राम में रहने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse juxtaposes royal power with ascetic renunciation. Bharata is described as "Prabhu" (lord/capable) and "Vira" (hero), surrounded by his army ("sasainyo"), yet he looks like a hermit ("muniveshadharah") with matted locks and bark skin. This emphasizes that his austerity is a choice born of strength, not weakness. He maintains the military infrastructure necessary for state protection but denies himself any personal luxury. By living in Nandigrama in this manner, he fulfills his vow to live exactly as Rama lives in the forest, creating a spiritual solidarity with his brother.

यह श्लोक भरत के अद्भुत त्याग का चित्रण करता है। 'प्रभु:' (समर्थ/स्वामी) और 'वीर:' (वीर) विशेषणों का प्रयोग यह बताने के लिए किया गया है कि भरत ने यह जीवन किसी विवशता में नहीं, बल्कि स्वेच्छा से चुना है। वे राजा हैं, सेना उनके पास है ('ससैन्यो'), किन्तु वेषभूषा मुनियों वाली है ('मुनिवेषधर:')। यह 'राजर्षि' की अवधारणा का व्यावहारिक रूप है। नन्दिग्राम में रहते हुए भी उन्होंने राज्य की सुरक्षा (सेना) से समझौता नहीं किया, परन्तु स्वयं के उपभोग को पूर्णतः त्याग दिया। यह राम के वनवास के समानांतर अपना वनवास रचने का प्रयास है।
