धृष्टश्च जितकाशीं च नृशंस: पुरुषादक: ।
अवलिप्तश्च पापश्च त्वां च तात न मृष्यते ॥ ॥२-११६-१२॥
Dhṛṣṭaśca jitakāśīṃ ca nṛśaṃsaḥ puruṣādakaḥ । Avaliptaśca pāpaśca tvāṃ ca tāta na mṛṣyate ॥ ॥2-116-12॥
Translation
He is arrogant, boastful of victory, cruel, a man-eater, haughty, and sinful. And, dear one, he does not tolerate you.

वह ढीठ, विजय का अभिमान रखने वाला, क्रूर, नरभक्षी, घमंडी और पापी है। हे तात! वह तुम्हें सहन नहीं कर पा रहा है।
English Commentary
A comprehensive psychological profile of Khara is provided here through a string of potent adjectives: dhṛṣṭa (impudent), nṛśaṃsa (cruel), and puruṣādaka (man-eater). The term jitakāśī implies one who acts triumphantly, perhaps arrogantly assuming victory before it is won. The crucial phrase is na mṛṣyate (he does not tolerate/forgive). Khara’s hostility is personal towards Rama. It implies that Rama’s very existence in the forest is an affront to Khara’s ego and authority. This moves the conflict from general harassment of sages to a direct vendetta against Rama.

वाल्मीकि जी ने खर के चरित्र चित्रण के लिए विशेषणों की झड़ी लगा दी है। 'धृष्ट' (निर्लज्ज), 'जितकाशी' (जीत का झूठा दिखावा करने वाला या अभिमानी), और 'नृशंस' (दयाहीन)। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण वाक्यांश है 'त्वां च... न मृष्यते' (वह तुम्हें सहन नहीं करता)। यह दो विपरीत शक्तियों का टकराव है। अन्धकार (खर) प्रकाश (राम) को सहन नहीं कर सकता। ऋषि राम को यह बता रहे हैं कि यह युद्ध केवल ऋषियों की रक्षा का नहीं, बल्कि राम के अस्तित्व और स्वाभिमान का भी प्रश्न है क्योंकि शत्रु उन्हें सीधे चुनौती दे रहा है।
