Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तैर्दुरात्मभिरामृष्टानाश्रमान् प्रजिहासव: ।
गमनायान्यदेशस्य चोदयन्त्यृषयो ऽद्य माम् ॥ ॥२-११६-१८॥
Tairdūrātma-bhirāmṛṣṭānāśramān prajihāsavaḥ । Gamanāyānyadeśasya codayantyṛṣayo 'dya mām ॥ ॥2-116-18॥
Translation
Wishing to abandon the hermitages defiled by those evil-souled ones, the Rishis are urging me today to depart for another land.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उन दुरात्माओं द्वारा दूषित किए गए आश्रमों को त्यागने की इच्छा से, ऋषिगण आज मुझे दूसरे देश (स्थान) जाने के लिए प्रेरित कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
The culmination of the harassment is displacement. The word āmṛṣṭān (touched/defiled) implies that the physical presence of the Rakshasas has rendered the sacred groves unfit for habitation according to the laws of ritual purity. The sages are now prajihāsavaḥ (desirous of leaving). This highlights the pacifist dilemma of the Brahmin ascetics: forbidden from violence by their vows, their only recourse against aggression is migration. The speaker notes that the collective consensus of the sages is urging him to lead this exodus to a safer land.

अत्याचार की पराकाष्ठा के कारण अब ऋषियों ने पलायन का निर्णय लिया है। 'आमृष्टान्' का अर्थ है 'छुआ गया' या 'दूषित किया गया'। पवित्रता नष्ट हो जाने के कारण आश्रम अब रहने योग्य नहीं रहे। 'प्रजिहासव:' (छोड़ने की इच्छा रखने वाले) शब्द ऋषियों की विवशता को दर्शाता है। वे कायर नहीं हैं, परन्तु हिंसा का प्रतिकार हिंसा से करना उनके तपोधर्म के विरुद्ध है, अतः वे स्थान परिवर्तन को ही उचित मानते हैं। वृद्ध ऋषि बताते हैं कि वे स्वयं शायद न जाते, किन्तु अन्य ऋषि उन्हें 'चोदयन्ति' (प्रेरित कर रहे हैं/दबाव डाल रहे हैं)।
