ये तत्र चित्रकूटस्य पुरस्तात्तापसाश्रमे ।
राममाश्रित्य निरतास्तानलक्षयदुत्सुकान् ॥२-११६-२॥
ye tatra citrakūṭasya purastāttāpasāśrame |
rāmamāśritya niratāstānalakṣayadutsukān ॥2-116-2॥
Translation
Rama noticed that those ascetics who lived in that hermitage in front of Chitrakuta, depending on him for protection, were anxious.

चित्रकूट के अग्रभाग में स्थित उस आश्रम में जो तपस्वी राम का आश्रय लेकर (निर्भर होकर) रहते थे, राम ने उन्हें चिंतित (उत्सुक) देखा।
English Commentary
The relationship between Rama and the sages is defined here: they were "ramamashritya" (relying on Rama). They looked to him for security. Seeing these very dependents anxious ("utsukan") disturbs Rama. It creates a paradox—Rama is present to protect them, yet they are uneasy. This sets the stage for Rama's introspective questioning. He feels responsible for their well-being and interprets their collective anxiety as a potential failure of his presence or conduct.

यहाँ तपस्वियों की स्थिति स्पष्ट की गई है—वे 'राममाश्रित्य' (राम के आश्रय में) थे। अर्थात, वे राम को अपना रक्षक मानते थे। किन्तु अब वही तपस्वी चिंतित दिख रहे हैं। राम के लिए यह चिंता का विषय है क्योंकि क्षत्रिय का धर्म है कि उसके आश्रित निर्भय रहें। यदि रक्षक के होते हुए भी आश्रित भयभीत हैं, तो यह रक्षक के लिए आत्म-निरीक्षण का क्षण है। 'पुरस्तात्' (सामने/आगे) शब्द बताता है कि ये घटनाएँ राम की आँखों के सामने घट रही थीं।
