इत्युक्तवन्तं रामस्तं राजपुत्रस्तपस्विनम् ।
न शशाकोत्तरैर्वाक्यैरवरोद्धुं समुत्सुक: ॥ ॥२-११६-२३॥
Ityuktavantaṃ rāmastaṃ rājaputrastapasvinam । Na śaśākottarairvākyairavaroddhuṃ samutsukaḥ ॥ ॥2-116-23॥
Translation
Rama, the prince, was unable to dissuade that ascetic, who was eager to depart, with his replies (assurances of protection).

ऐसा कहने वाले और जाने के लिए उत्सुक उस तपस्वी को राजपुत्र राम अपने उत्तरों (आश्वासनों) द्वारा रोकने में समर्थ न हो सके।
English Commentary
This verse captures a moment of diplomatic failure born of necessity. Rama, designated as rājaputra (prince), naturally tries to fulfill his duty by offering protection to keep the community together. However, the sage is described as samutsukaḥ (anxious/eager to leave). The fear of Khara has outweighed their faith in Rama's current ability to guarantee peace in that specific location. It illustrates the limitations of persuasion when the audience is gripped by existential fear. Rama respects their agency and does not use force to detain them.

यहाँ राम की विवशता और ऋषियों के भय की तीव्रता का चित्रण है। राम 'राजपुत्र' हैं, जिनका धर्म रक्षण है, फिर भी वे तपस्वियों को रोक नहीं सके। 'समुत्सुक:' (अत्यंत उत्सुक) शब्द बताता है कि ऋषियों ने मन बना लिया था और वे भय से इतने आक्रांत थे कि राम के आश्वासन भी उन्हें आश्वस्त नहीं कर पाए। राम ने निश्चय ही रक्षा का वचन दिया होगा ('उत्तरैर्वाक्यै:'), किन्तु ऋषियों का निर्णय अटल था। यह स्थिति राम के वनवास के कष्टों को बढ़ाती है, क्योंकि सज्जनों का साथ छूट रहा है।
