Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तेषामौत्सुक्यमालक्ष्य रामस्त्वात्मनि शङ्कित: ।
कृताञ्जलिरुवाचेदमृषिं कुलपतिं तत: ॥२-११६-४॥
teṣāmautsukyamālakṣya rāmastvātmani śaṅkitaḥ |
kṛtāñjaliruvācedamṛṣiṃ kulapatiṃ tataḥ ॥2-116-4॥
Translation
Observing their anxiety, Rama became apprehensive about himself. Then, with folded hands, he spoke to the Kulapati (Chief Sage).
हिंदी अनुवाद
उनकी उस उत्सुकता (बेचैनी) को देखकर राम मन ही मन शंकित हो उठे और हाथ जोड़कर (वहां के) कुलपति ऋषि से यह बोले।
English Commentary
Rama's reaction is deeply revealing of his character. Instead of taking offense at the whispering, he becomes "atmani shankitah" (suspicious of himself/apprehensive). He assumes the fault lies with him. He approaches the "Kulapati" (the chancellor or head of the community of ten thousand sages) with "kritanjali" (folded hands), showing supreme respect. This demonstrates Rama's lack of ego; despite being a prince and a warrior, he submits to the moral authority of the sages and seeks immediate correction if he has erred.

ऋषियों के व्यवहार को देखकर राम 'आत्मनि शङ्कित:' (स्वयं के विषय में शंकित) हो गए। यह एक उत्तम पुरुष का लक्षण है—जब दूसरे नाराज या परेशान हों, तो वह दोष दूसरों में नहीं, स्वयं में ढूँढता है। राम को लगा कि शायद उनसे कोई अपराध हुआ है। उन्होंने 'कृताञ्जलि:' (हाथ जोड़कर) विनयपूर्वक 'कुलपतिं' (आश्रम के प्रधान/कुलपति) से प्रश्न किया। राम, जो स्वयं राजा हैं, ऋषियों के प्रति अपनी विनम्रता और मर्यादा का पालन करना नहीं भूलते।
