उग्रेण तपसा युक्ता नियमैश्चाप्यलङ्कृता ।
दसवर्षसहस्राणि यया तप्तं महत्तप: ॥ ॥२-११७-१०॥
Ugreṇa tapasā yuktā niyamaiścāpyalaṅkṛtā । Daśavarṣasahasrāṇi yayā taptaṃ mahattapaḥ ॥ ॥2-117-10॥
Translation
"Endowed with severe penance and adorned with strict vows, she has performed great austerities for ten thousand years."

जो उग्र तपस्या से युक्त हैं और कठिन नियमों से सुशोभित हैं; जिन्होंने दस हजार वर्षों तक महान तप किया है।
English Commentary
The source of her power is quantified here. She is ugreṇa tapasā yuktā (yoked to terrible/intense penance). The metaphor niyamaiśca apyalaṅkṛtā (adorned by vows/restrictions) suggests that her discipline is her jewelry. The mention of "ten thousand years" serves to elevate her status far above ordinary mortals, placing her in the realm of the semi-divine. It explains why even the gods respect her, as elaborated in the next verse.

अनसूया की शक्ति का स्रोत उनका 'महत्तप:' (महान तप) है। 'नियमैश्चाप्यलंकृत' (नियमों से अलंकृत) वाक्यांश बहुत सुंदर है—तपस्वियों के लिए आभूषण स्वर्ण नहीं, बल्कि उनके नियम और संयम होते हैं। 'दशवर्षसहस्राणि' (दस हजार वर्ष) का समय काल उनकी साधना की गंभीरता और प्राचीनता को दर्शाता है। वाल्मीकि यहाँ स्थापित कर रहे हैं कि अनसूया केवल एक ऋषि-पत्नी नहीं, बल्कि स्वयं एक सिद्ध योगिनी हैं।
