इह मे भरतो दृष्टो मातरश्च सनागरा: ।
सा च मे स्मृतिरन्वेति तान्नित्यमनुशोचत: ॥ ॥२-११७-२॥
Iha me bharato dṛṣṭo mātaraśca sanāgarāḥ । Sā ca me smṛtirannveti tānnityamanuśocataḥ ॥ ॥2-117-2॥
Translation
"Here I saw Bharata and my mothers along with the citizens. That memory follows me, who am constantly grieving for them."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(राम सोचते हैं) "यहाँ मैंने भरत को और नगरवासियों सहित अपनी माताओं को देखा था। वह स्मृति मेरा पीछा करती रहती है और मैं नित्य उनके लिए शोक करता रहता हूँ।"
English Commentary
This verse reveals the psychological reason for Rama's departure. Chitrakoot has become a locus of painful nostalgia. The reunion with Bharata and the mothers transformed the neutral forest into a landscape of memory. The phrase smṛtir anveti (the memory follows/haunts me) suggests that the environment triggers constant grief (anuśocataḥ), hindering his ability to maintain the stoic detachment required for his forest exile. To move forward, he must physically distance himself from the site of that emotional climax.

यह राम के स्थान परिवर्तन का मनोवैज्ञानिक कारण है। चित्रकूट अब भरत-मिलाप की स्मृतियों से भर गया है। वनवास में 'वैराग्य' आवश्यक है, किन्तु यहाँ का हर पत्थर और वृक्ष उन्हें अयोध्या, माता कौशल्या और भरत के प्रेम की याद दिलाता है। 'स्मृतिरन्वेति' (स्मृति पीछा करती है) अत्यंत मार्मिक प्रयोग है। राम स्वीकार करते हैं कि वे 'नित्यमनुशोचत:' (नित्य शोक करते हैं)। भावनात्मक रूप से मुक्त होने के लिए उन्हें ऐसे स्थान पर जाना होगा जहाँ अयोध्या की प्रत्यक्ष स्मृतियाँ न हों।
