स्कन्धावारनिवेशेन तेन तस्य महात्मन: ।
हयहस्तिकरीषैश्च उपमर्द्द: कृतो भृशम् ॥ ॥२-११७-३॥
Skandhāvāraniveśena tena tasya mahātmanaḥ । Hayahastikarīṣaiśca upamarddaḥ kṛto bhṛśam ॥ ॥2-117-3॥
Translation
"Also, because of the encampment of the army of that great soul (Bharata), and by the dung of horses and elephants, this place has been heavily trampled and soiled."

"और उस महात्मा (भरत) की सेना के पड़ाव (शिविर) के कारण तथा घोड़ों और हाथियों की लीद से यह स्थान अत्यधिक कुचला गया (और गंदा हो गया) है।"
English Commentary
This is the physical/sanitary reason for leaving. The massive influx of Bharata's army (skandhāvāra) has degraded the environment. The accumulation of karīṣa (dung/waste) from the horses and elephants has compromised the hygiene and ritual purity of the location. The word upamardaḥ (crushed/trampled/spoiled) conveys the ecological damage caused by the large retinue. For an ascetic life dependent on foraging and pristine surroundings for meditation, the area has become uninhabitable.

यह स्थान त्यागने का भौतिक/पारिस्थितिक (ecological) कारण है। 'स्कन्धावार' का अर्थ है सैन्य छावनी। भरत की विशाल चतुरंगिणी सेना के रुकने से वन की प्राकृतिक सुंदरता और पवित्रता नष्ट हो गई है। 'हयहस्तिकरीषै:' (घोड़े और हाथियों के मल/लीद) से स्थान अपवित्र हो गया है। एक तपस्वी के लिए 'शौच' (पवित्रता) अनिवार्य है। 'उपमर्द्द:' का अर्थ है कुचला जाना या मर्दन करना। वन अब शांत और स्वच्छ तपोवन नहीं रहा, बल्कि एक उजड़े हुए कैंप जैसा हो गया है।
