मिथिलाधिपतिर्वीरो जनको नाम धर्मवित् ।
क्षत्ऺत्रधर्मे ह्यभिरतो न्यायत: शास्ति मेदिनीम् ॥२-११८-२७॥
mithilādhipatirvīro janako nāma dharmavit । kṣatradharme hyabhirato nyāyataḥ śāsti medinīm ॥2-118-27॥
Translation
The ruler of Mithila is a heroic king named Janaka, who is a knower of righteousness (Dharma). Devoted to the duties of the warrior class (Kshatradharma), he rules the earth with absolute justice.

मिथिला के स्वामी, वीर और धर्म के ज्ञाता जनक नाम के राजा हैं। वे क्षत्रिय धर्म में अनुरक्त होकर न्यायपूर्वक पृथ्वी का शासन करते हैं।
English Commentary
Here, Sita Devi introduces her father not merely as a monarch but as an ideal ruler. The term Dharmavit (knower of Dharma) is significant, highlighting King Janaka's reputation as a Rajarshi—a king with the wisdom of a sage. Despite his high spiritual standing, the verse notes he was Kshatradharme abhirata (engaged in the duty of a warrior/king), proving that he did not forsake his administrative responsibilities for spirituality. He ruled with justice (Nyayatah), embodying the perfect balance of martial power and moral wisdom required to govern a kingdom effectively.

यहाँ माता सीता अपने पिता के चरित्र का चित्रण कर रही हैं। राजा जनक केवल एक शासक नहीं, बल्कि 'राजर्षि' (राजा और ऋषि) माने जाते हैं। 'धर्मवित्' विशेषण अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है; यह दर्शाता है कि वे धर्म के मर्म को जानते हैं। यद्यपि वे आध्यात्मिक ज्ञान में लीन रहते थे, तथापि 'क्षत्रधर्मे ह्यभिरतो' यह स्पष्ट करता है कि उन्होंने अपने सांसारिक कर्तव्यों का त्याग नहीं किया था। वे अनासक्त भाव से, न्याय और नीति के साथ प्रजा का पालन करते थे। यह श्लोक आदर्श राजा की परिभाषा प्रस्तुत करता है जो शक्ति (वीर) और ज्ञान (धर्मवित्) का संतुलन है।
