पतिसंयोगसुलभं वयो दृष्ट्वा तु मे पिता ।
चिन्तामभ्यगमद्दीनो वित्तनाशादिवाधन: ॥२-११८-३४॥
patisaṃyogasulabhaṃ vayo dṛṣṭvā tu me pitā । cintāmabhyagamaddīno vittanāśādivādhanaḥ ॥2-118-34॥
Translation
Seeing that I had reached an age suitable for union with a husband, my father became distressed and fell into deep anxiety, like a poor man who has lost his wealth.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जब मेरे पिता ने मेरी अवस्था पति से संयोग (विवाह) के योग्य देखी, तो वे उसी प्रकार दीन होकर गहरी चिंता में डूब गए, जैसे कोई निर्धन व्यक्ति अपना धन नष्ट हो जाने पर दुखी होता है।
English Commentary
This verse poignantly captures the universal anxiety of a father regarding his daughter's marriage. Despite being a powerful king, Janaka felt Dina (miserable/helpless) upon realizing Sita was of marriageable age. The simile used is striking: he felt like a poor man who had lost his meager wealth. This reflects the immense pressure of finding a suitable match and the impending emotional loss of giving away a beloved daughter. It humanizes the sage-king, showing his vulnerability born of paternal love.

यह एक अत्यंत मार्मिक उपमा है। पुत्री के विवाह की चिंता किसी भी पिता के लिए स्वाभाविक होती है, चाहे वह राजा ही क्यों न हो। 'दीन' शब्द का प्रयोग राजा जनक के लिए चौंकाने वाला है, परन्तु यह कन्या के पिता की विवशता को दर्शाता है। उपमा 'वित्तनाशादिवाधन:' (जैसे निर्धन का धन खो गया हो) बहुत गहरी है। इसका एक अर्थ यह है कि पिता को अपनी पुत्री (जो उसका सबसे बड़ा धन है) के दूर जाने का भय है, और दूसरा यह कि योग्य वर न मिलने की चिंता उन्हें दरिद्र की भांति असहाय बना रही है।
