असञ्चाल्यं मनुष्यैश्च यत्नेनापि च गौरवात् ।
तन्न शक्ताऽनमयितुं स्वप्नेष्वपि नराधिपा: ॥२-११८-४०॥
asañcālyaṃ manuṣyaiśca yatnenāpi ca gauravāt । tanna śaktā namayituṃ svapneṣvapi narādhipāḥ ॥2-118-40॥
Translation
Due to its immense weight, it was immovable by men even with great effort. Kings were unable to bend it, even in their dreams.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अपने भारीपन (गौरव) के कारण वह धनुष मनुष्यों द्वारा प्रयत्न करने पर भी हिलाया नहीं जा सकता था। बड़े-बड़े राजा उसे झुकाने (प्रत्यंचा चढ़ाने) की बात तो दूर, स्वप्न में भी ऐसा करने में समर्थ नहीं थे।
English Commentary
Sita emphasizes the impossibility of the task. The word Gauravat refers to the sheer physical heaviness of the bow. It was Asanchalyam (immovable) by human standards. The phrase 'even in dreams' (Svapneshvapi) is a powerful rhetorical device suggesting that the task was beyond the subconscious limits of human imagination or ambition. This sets the stage for Rama's feat, distinguishing him from all other kings who were mere mortals facing a divine object.

यहाँ 'अतिशयोक्ति' अलंकार का सुंदर प्रयोग है, जो धनुष की दिव्यता को स्थापित करता है। 'गौरवात्' का अर्थ यहाँ 'भारीपन' और 'प्रतिष्ठा' दोनों है। सामान्य मनुष्यों के लिए उसे हिलाना ('असञ्चाल्यं') भी असंभव था। सीता जी कहती हैं कि उसे झुकाना या डोरी चढ़ाना तो दूर, राजा लोग 'स्वप्नेष्वपि' (सपने में भी) ऐसा करने की कल्पना नहीं कर सकते थे। यह शर्त शारीरिक बल की परीक्षा से परे, एक दैवीय नियति की परीक्षा थी।
