Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दीयमानां न तु तदा प्रतिजग्राह राघव: ।
अविज्ञाय पितुश्छन्दमयोध्याधिपते: प्रभो: ॥२-११८-५१॥
dīyamānāṃ na tu tadā pratijagrāha rāghavaḥ । avijñāya pituśchandamayodhyādhipateḥ prabhoḥ ॥2-118-51॥
Translation
Though being offered (by Janaka), Raghava did not accept my hand at that moment, without knowing the will of his father, the Lord of Ayodhya and his Master.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(जनक द्वारा) मुझे सौंपे जाने पर भी, राघव (राम) ने अयोध्यापति अपने प्रभु पिता (दशरथ) का अभिप्राय जाने बिना, उस समय मेरा पाणिग्रहण (विवाह प्रस्ताव) स्वीकार नहीं किया।
English Commentary
This verse exemplifies Rama's title as Maryada Purushottama (the upholder of righteousness and boundaries). Even after winning the Swayamvara and rightfully earning Sita's hand, he refused to formally accept the marriage proposal without his father's consent. He viewed King Dasharatha not just as a father, but as his Prabhu (Master/Lord). This act highlights his supreme self-control and filial piety, placing family hierarchy and parental blessings above personal victory or gratification.

यह श्लोक भगवान राम के 'मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम' स्वरूप का आधार है। स्वयंवर की कठिनतम शर्त जीतने के बाद, सीता उनकी धर्मपत्नी बन चुकी थीं, परन्तु उन्होंने तब तक औपचारिक स्वीकृति नहीं दी जब तक उनके पिता राजा दशरथ की आज्ञा प्राप्त नहीं हो गई। यह उनकी अगाध पितृभक्ति और अनुशासन को दर्शाता है। एक क्षत्रिय कुमार के लिए अपनी विजय का उपहार लेना अधिकार था, किन्तु राम के लिए पिता का सम्मान (पितुश्छन्दम्) सर्वोपरि था।
