अनसूया तु धर्मज्ञा श्रुत्वा तां महतीं कथाम् ।
पर्य्यष्वजत बाहुभ्यां शिरस्याघ्राय मैथिलीम् ॥२-११९-१॥
anasūyā tu dharmajñā śrutvā tāṃ mahatīṃ kathām । paryyaṣvajata bāhubhyāṃ śirasyāghrāya maithilīm ॥2-119-1॥
Translation
Anasuya, the knower of Dharma, having heard that great story, embraced Maithili (Sita) with both arms and smelled her head (a gesture of blessing).

धर्म को जानने वाली अनसूया ने उस महान कथा को सुनकर, मैथिली (सीता) को अपनी दोनों भुजाओं से गले लगा लिया और उनका मस्तक सूंघा।
English Commentary
Anasuya responds with deep maternal affection. The gesture of smelling the head (Shirasyaghraya) is an ancient Vedic expression of parental love and blessing, superior even to a kiss in its sanctity. Described as Dharmajila (knower of righteousness), Anasuya validates Sita’s narrative. By embracing her, the ascetic matriarch accepts Sita not just as a queen, but as a spiritual daughter worthy of the forest's austerities.

सीता की निष्कपट और दिव्य कथा सुनकर तपस्विनी अनसूया का हृदय वात्सल्य से भर गया। 'शिरस्याघ्राय' (सिर सूंघना) प्राचीन भारतीय संस्कृति में बड़ों द्वारा छोटों को आशीर्वाद और स्नेह देने की एक मुद्रा है, जो माता-पिता अपने बच्चों के साथ करते हैं। अनसूया 'धर्मज्ञा' हैं, इसलिए वे सीता के धर्म-पालन और राम के प्रति उनकी निष्ठा का मूल्य समझती हैं। यह आलिंगन सीता के तपस्वी जीवन की स्वीकार्यता और आशीर्वाद का प्रतीक है।
