Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उच्छिष्टं वा प्रमत्तं वा तापसं धर्मचारिणम् ।
अदन्त्यस्मिन् महारण्ये तान्निवारय राघव ॥२-११९-१९॥
Ucchiṣṭaṃ vā pramattaṃ vā tāpasaṃ dharmacāriṇam । Adantyasmin mahāraṇye tānnivāraya rāghav ॥ ॥2-119-19॥
Translation
They eat the righteous ascetics who are impure (unwashed after eating) or careless in this great forest. O Raghava, please ward them off.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(वे राक्षस) इस महावन में उन धर्मचारी तपस्वियों को खा जाते हैं जो अपवित्र (जूठे मुँह वाले) या असावधान होते हैं। हे राघव! आप उन राक्षसों को हटाएँ (रोकें)।
English Commentary
This verse connects physical hygiene and mental alertness with spiritual safety. The Rakshasas prey on those who are "ucchiṣṭaṃ" (impure/unwashed) or "pramattaṃ" (heedless/careless). This suggests that maintaining spiritual purity and constant vigilance shields one from evil forces. The ascetics explicitly ask Rama to "nivāraya" (ward off/prevent) these demons. This is a pivotal moment where the passive ascetics formally request the protection of the warrior prince, initiating Rama's role as the protector of the Dandaka forest sages.
