Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
रजनीचरसत्त्वानि प्रचरन्ति समन्तत: ।
तपोवनमृगा ह्येते वेदितीर्थेषु शेरते ॥२-११९-७॥
rajanīcarasattvāni pracaranti samantataḥ । tapovanamṛgā hyete veditīrtheṣu śerate ॥2-119-7॥
Translation
"Creatures that roam the night remain active all around, while these deer of the penance-grove are sleeping near the sacrificial altars."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"रात्रि में विचरण करने वाले प्राणी (रजनीचर) अब सब ओर घूमने लगे हैं, और तपोवन के ये (पालतू/शांत) हिरण वेदियों (यज्ञ-स्थलों) के समीप सो रहे हैं।"
English Commentary
The verse contrasts the wild and the domestic aspects of the forest. The Rajanichara (night-wanderers/predators) begin their prowl, signifying the danger of the night. Conversely, the hermitage deer sleep peacefully near the holy altars (Vedi). This highlights the sanctity of the Tapovana (penance grove)—it is a sanctuary where even animals find safety from natural threats, protected by the spiritual power of the sages.

यहाँ विरोधाभास का सुंदर प्रयोग है। एक ओर जंगल के जंगली 'रजनीचर' (रात्रिचर जीव) सक्रिय हो रहे हैं, और दूसरी ओर आश्रम के मृग निर्भय होकर 'वेदितीर्थेषु' (यज्ञ वेदियों के पास) सो रहे हैं। यह आश्रम के अहिंसक और सुरक्षापूर्ण वातावरण को दर्शाता है जहाँ पशु भी ऋषियों के सानिध्य में सुरक्षित महसूस करते हैं। बाहर का जंगल भयावह हो सकता है, किन्तु आश्रम शांति का द्वीप है।
