ततः श्रुत्वा महाराजः कैकेय्या दारुणम् वचः ।
चिन्तामभिसमापेदे मुहूर्तम् प्रतताप च ॥ ॥२-१२-१॥
tataḥ śrutvā mahārājaḥ kaikeyyā dāruṇam vacaḥ । cintāmabhisamāpede muhūrtam pratatāpa ca ॥ ॥2-12-1॥
Translation
Then, having heard those cruel words of Kaikeyi, the Great King fell into deep anxiety and burned with grief for a while.

तब महाराज दशरथ कैकेयी के उन कठोर वचनों को सुनकर घोर चिंता में डूब गए और कुछ देर तक (दुःख की अग्नि में) जलते रहे।
English Commentary
The narrative shifts to Dasharatha's visceral reaction. Hearing the 'darunam' (cruel/dreadful) words, he is consumed by anxiety. The verb 'pratatapa' (burned/heated up) suggests an intense physiological response to the shock, as if he were burning with fever or fire. The realization of what Kaikeyi is actually asking—the destruction of his beloved son—sends him into a state of acute torment.

यहाँ से सर्ग 12 (या नया दृश्य) आरंभ होता है। 'दारुणम् वचः' (भयानक/कठोर वचन) सुनकर दशरथ की प्रतिक्रिया का वर्णन है। राजा 'चिन्तामभिसमापेदे'—पूरी तरह चिंताग्रस्त हो गए। 'प्रतताप' (तपे/जले) शब्द का उपयोग राजा की शारीरिक और मानसिक पीड़ा को दर्शाता है। यह केवल उदासी नहीं थी, बल्कि एक तीव्र ज्वर जैसा संताप था जो कैकेयी की मांग सुनकर उनके पूरे अस्तित्व में फैल गया।
