किम् नु मे यदि वा स्वप्नश्चित्तमोहोओऽपि वामम ।
अनुभूतोपसर्गो वा मनसो वाप्युपद्रवः ॥ ॥२-१२-२॥
kim nu me yadi vā svapnaścittamohō'pi vāmama । anubhūtopasargo vā manaso vāpyupadravaḥ ॥ ॥2-12-2॥
Translation
(The King thought) Is this a dream happening to me? Or is it a delusion of my mind? Is it a resurgence of some affliction, or a disturbance of my psyche?

(राजा सोचने लगे) क्या मैं कोई स्वप्न देख रहा हूँ? या यह मेरे चित्त का मोह (भ्रम) है? क्या यह कोई पुरानी बीमारी (उपसर्ग) उभर आई है, या यह मेरे मन का कोई विकार है?
English Commentary
Dasharatha enters a state of denial. The demand is so inconceivable that he questions his own sanity rather than accepting reality. He wonders if it is a 'svapna' (dream), 'chittamoha' (hallucination), or a 'manaso upadrava' (mental disturbance). He grasps for any explanation—madness, illness, nightmare—that would make the current situation unreal. This highlights the stark contrast between the loving Kaikeyi he thought he knew and the woman standing before him.

दशरथ को अपनी इंद्रियों पर विश्वास नहीं हो रहा है। कैकेयी, जो उनसे इतना प्रेम करती थी, ऐसी बात कह सकती है—यह उनके लिए असंभव था। इसलिए वे सोचते हैं कि शायद यह 'स्वप्न' है या 'चित्तमोह' (मानसिक भ्रम)। वे इसे 'उपसर्ग' (शारीरिक व्याधि) या 'मनसो उपद्रव' (पागलपन) मानने को तैयार हैं, लेकिन यह स्वीकार नहीं कर पा रहे कि यह वास्तविकता है। यह श्लोक उनके गहरे आघात (shock) और इनकार (denial) की स्थिति को दिखाता है।
