काषायपरिधानस्तु कथम् भूमौ निवत्स्यति ।
कस्यैतद्दारुणम् वाक्यमेवम् विधमचिन्तितम् ॥२-१२-१०१॥
Kāṣāyaparidhānastu katham bhūmau nivatsyati |
Kasyaitaddāruṇam vākyamevam vidhamacintitam ॥2-12-101॥
Translation
Wearing saffron (bark) robes, how will he sleep on the bare ground? Whose terrible idea is this, of a kind never before imagined?

वह गेरुए (वल्कल) वस्त्र पहनकर जमीन पर कैसे सोएगा? ऐसा भयानक और अकल्पनीय विचार (राम के वनवास का) किसका है?
English Commentary
The King visualizes the physical indignity of the exile. He imagines Rama trading royal silks for 'kāṣāya' (ascetic robes) and sleeping on the hard earth. The second half of the verse reveals Dasharatha's shock at the sheer audacity of the plan. He asks, 'Whose terrible ('dāruṇam') idea is this?' suggesting that the demand for exile is so alien and cruel that it feels external to the natural order of their family. He refers to the plan as 'acintitam'—something inconceivable or unthought of, highlighting that until this moment, Rama's misfortune was beyond the realm of possibility for him.

दशरथ अपनी आँखों के सामने राम को सन्यासी वेश में देख रहे हैं। 'काषाय' यहाँ वनवासी संतों द्वारा पहने जाने वाले गेरुआ या वल्कल वस्त्रों का प्रतीक है। मखमली शैया पर सोने वाला राम 'भूमौ' (धरती पर) कैसे सोएगा? श्लोक के दूसरे भाग में दशरथ आश्चर्य और क्रोध मिश्रित भाव से पूछते हैं कि यह 'दारुण' (क्रूर) विचार आखिर आया कहाँ से? वे मानो यह मानने को तैयार नहीं हैं कि यह विचार केवल कैकेयी का हो सकता है; वे परोक्ष रूप से इसके पीछे किसी और की कुटिल बुद्धि (मंथरा) या विधाता के क्रूर खेल का संकेत दे रहे हैं। 'अचिन्तितम्' का अर्थ है वह बात जो कभी स्वप्न में भी न सोची गई हो।
