न ब्रवीमि स्त्रियः सर्वा भरतस्यैव मातरम् ।
अनर्थभावेऽर्थपरे नृशंसे ।
ममानुतापाय निविष्टभावे ।
किमप्रियम् पश्यसि मन्निमित्तम् ।
हितानुकारिण्यथवापि रामे ॥२-१२-१०३॥
Na bravīmi striyaḥ sarvā bharatasyaiva mātaram |
Anarthabhāve'rthapare nṛśaṃse... (structure varies in recensions) ...mamānutāpāya niviṣṭabhāve... kimapriyam paśyasi mannimittam hitānukāriṇyathavāpi rāme ॥2-12-103॥
Translation
I do not speak of all women, but only of the mother of Bharata. O you who are intent on calamity, obsessed with gain, O cruel one! You are set on causing me torment. What unpleasantness do you see caused by me, or by Rama who always acts for your welfare?
हिंदी अनुवाद
(परन्तु) मैं सब स्त्रियों को नहीं कहता, केवल (एक) भरत की माता को कहता हूँ। हे अनर्थ करने वाली! हे स्वार्थ में अंधी! हे क्रूर स्त्री! तू मेरे संताप के लिए ही स्थित है। तूने मेरे कारण अथवा मेरा हित करने वाले राम के कारण क्या अप्रिय होते देखा (जो तू ऐसा कर रही है)?
English Commentary
Dasharatha immediately retracts his generalization from the previous verse. He clarifies, 'Na bravīmi striyaḥ sarvā' (I do not speak of all women), narrowing his focus solely to Kaikeyi. He heaps epithets upon her: she is 'nṛśaṃsa' (cruel/man-killing) and focused only on her own 'artha' (gain) at the cost of others' disaster. He questions her motive, asking what offense either he or Rama has committed against her. He specifically notes that Rama is 'hitānukārin'—one who acts for the welfare of others (including Kaikeyi). This highlights the irrationality of Kaikeyi’s hatred in Dasharatha's eyes.

दशरथ को तुरंत अपनी भूल का अहसास होता है और वे स्पष्ट करते हैं कि उनकी निंदा 'सर्वाः स्त्रियः' (सभी स्त्रियों) के लिए नहीं, अपितु केवल भरत की माता (कैकेयी) के लिए है। वे कैकेयी के लिए अत्यंत कठोर विशेषणों का प्रयोग करते हैं—'अनर्थभावे' (विनाश चाहने वाली), 'अर्थपरे' (लोभी), और 'नृशंसे' (क्रूर)। वे पूछते हैं कि राम ने, जो सदा 'हितानुकारि' (हित करने वाला/आज्ञाकारी) रहा है, तुम्हारा क्या बिगाड़ा है? यह श्लोक दशरथ की न्यायप्रियता को दिखाता है कि क्रोध में भी वे कौशल्या या सुमित्रा जैसी अन्य स्त्रियों का अपमान नहीं करना चाहते। वे कारण जानना चाहते हैं कि कैकेयी इतनी निष्ठुर क्यों हो गई।
