जीवितम् वात्मनो रामम् न त्वेव पितृवत्सलम् ।
परा भवति मे प्रीतिर्धृष्ट्वा तनयमग्रजम् ॥२-१२-१२॥
jīvitam vātmano rāmam na tveva pitṛvatsalam । parā bhavati me prītirdhṛṣṭvā tanayamagrajam ॥2-12-12॥
Translation
Seeing my eldest son Rama gives me greater joy than my own life or even those devoted to their fathers.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे अपने प्राणों अथवा अपने पिता के प्रति स्नेह रखने वाले जनों की अपेक्षा, अपने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र राम को देखकर अधिक प्रसन्नता होती है।
English Commentary
Here, King Dasharatha expresses the pinnacle of his paternal love. He attempts to make Kaikeyi understand that Rama is not merely a son to him, but dearer than life itself. The phrase jīvitam vātmano emphasizes that his own survival is secondary to his affection for Rama. This verse illustrates the depth of Vatsalya Rasa (sentiment of parental love), where the father's emotional existence is entirely tethered to his son. Dasharatha uses this emotional appeal hoping to awaken the mother within Kaikeyi, contrasting his profound love against her cruel demand for exile.
