अपिते चरणौ मूर्ध्ना स्पृशाम्येष प्रसीद मे ।
किमिदम् चिन्तितम् पापे त्वया परमदारुणम् ॥२-१२-१५॥
apite caraṇau mūrdhnā spṛśāmyeṣa prasīda me । kimidam cintitam pāpe tvayā paramadāruṇam ॥2-12-15॥
Translation
I touch your feet with my head; be gracious to me. O sinful one, how have you thought of this incredibly cruel thing?
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं अपना मस्तक झुकाकर तुम्हारे चरणों का स्पर्श करता हूँ, मुझ पर प्रसन्न हो जाओ। हे पापिनी! तुमने यह अत्यंत भयानक विचार कैसे किया?
English Commentary
This verse depicts one of the most poignant moments in the Ramayana. A Chakravarti Samrat (universal monarch), revered across the three worlds, prostrates himself touching his wife's feet with his head. This inversion of social and marital hierarchy underscores his utter helplessness. Even while calling her pāpe (sinful one), he begs for her mercy, revealing his internal conflict—rage at her cruelty versus desperation to save his son. In the cultural context, a husband touching his wife's feet is an act of extreme humiliation and surrender, signaling that Dasharatha has abandoned all ego to save Rama.

यह श्लोक रामायण के सबसे मार्मिक क्षणों में से एक है। चक्रवर्ती सम्राट दशरथ, जो तीनों लोकों में सम्मानित हैं, अपनी पत्नी के चरणों में अपना सिर रख रहे हैं। यह मर्यादा का पूर्ण उल्लंघन है, जो उनकी विवशता की गहराई को दर्शाता है। वे 'पापे' (पापिनी) कहते हुए भी उसके चरणों में गिर रहे हैं, जो उनके अंतद्वंद्व को प्रकट करता है—एक ओर पत्नी के कृत्य पर क्रोध, और दूसरी ओर पुत्र के लिए भीख माँगने की लाचारी। यह दृश्य भारतीय संस्कृति में अत्यंत शक्तिशाली है क्योंकि पति का पत्नी के पैर छूना सामान्य शिष्टाचार के विपरीत है, यह केवल अत्यंत संकटकाल में ही संभव है।
