Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स मे ज्येष्ठः सुतः श्रीमान् धर्मज्येष्ठ इतीव मे ।
तत्त्वया प्रियवादिन्या सेवार्थम् कथितम् भवेत् ॥२-१२-१७॥
sa me jyeṣṭhaḥ sutaḥ śrīmān dharmajyeṣṭha itīva me । tattvayā priyavādinyā sevārthām kathitam bhavet ॥2-12-17॥
Translation
He is my eldest son, glorious and foremost in righteousness. Perhaps you, who always speak pleasantly, have said this effectively for his service (or out of affection)?
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह (राम) मेरा ज्येष्ठ, श्रीमान और धर्म में श्रेष्ठ पुत्र है। (सदा) प्रिय बोलने वाली तुमने, कदाचित उसकी सेवा (भलाई/स्नेह) के भाव से ही यह सब कहा होगा?
English Commentary
Dasharatha's confusion deepens as he clings to the memory of the "sweet-speaking" (priyavādinyā) Kaikeyi he once knew. He constructs a fragile logic: perhaps she said this for Rama's own "service" or benefit, or perhaps as a test of his righteousness (dharmajyeṣṭha). It is a tragic irony where the King tries to reinterpret her clear rebellion through the lens of her past affection. By emphasizing Rama's virtues, he subtly reminds her that harming such a righteous soul contradicts the very nature she used to appreciate, desperately hoping she will revert to her former self.

दशरथ का भ्रम और गहराता जा रहा है। वे याद करते हैं कि कैकेयी हमेशा 'प्रियवादिनी' रही है और राम को मानती रही है। वे एक विचित्र तर्क का सहारा लेते हैं—शायद कैकेयी यह सब राम के 'सेवार्थम्' (सेवा या हित) के लिए कह रही है? शायद वह देखना चाहती है कि राम धर्म पालन में कितने पक्के हैं? यह राजा की विडंबना है कि वे कैकेयी के स्पष्ट विद्रोह को भी उसके पिछले मधुर व्यवहार के चश्मे से देखने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं। वे कैकेयी को याद दिला रहे हैं कि राम 'धर्मज्येष्ठ' हैं, अतः उनके साथ अन्याय करना धर्म के विरुद्ध होगा।
