Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न हि किम्चिदयुक्तम् वा विप्रियम् वा पुरा मम ।
अकरोस्त्वम् विशालाक्षि तेन न श्रद्दधाम्यहम् ॥२-१२-२०॥
na hi kimcidayuktam vā vipriyam vā purā mama । akarostvam viśālākṣi tena na śraddadhāmyaham ॥2-12-20॥
Translation
O large-eyed one, you have never done anything improper or unpleasant to me in the past. Therefore, I cannot believe this.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे विशाल नेत्रों वाली! तुमने पहले कभी मेरे लिए कुछ भी अयुक्त (अनुचित) या अप्रिय नहीं किया है। इसलिए, मैं (तुम्हारी इस बात पर) विश्वास नहीं कर पा रहा हूँ।
English Commentary
Dasharatha returns to reminiscing about their harmonious past. Using the affectionate epithet viśālākṣi (large-eyed one), he tries to appeal to her beauty and their shared intimacy. He expresses profound disbelief because her current actions contradict her entire history of behavior towards him. This reflects a state of cognitive dissonance; the King simply cannot reconcile the loving wife of the past with the ruthless woman before him. He pleads that because she never caused him pain before, this current infliction of cruelty feels unreal to him.

दशरथ पुनः कैकेयी के अतीत के प्रेमपूर्ण व्यवहार को याद करते हैं। 'विशालाक्षि' (सुंदर आँखों वाली) संबोधन का प्रयोग करके वे उसके प्रति अपने पुराने आकर्षण और स्नेह को जगाने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। वे कहते हैं कि उनका वर्तमान अनुभव उनके अतीत के अनुभव से मेल नहीं खाता, इसलिए उन्हें अविश्वास (disbelief) हो रहा है। यह एक मनोवैज्ञानिक स्थिति है जिसे 'संज्ञानात्मक विसंगति' (cognitive dissonance) कहा जा सकता है—दशरथ उस कैकेयी को स्वीकार नहीं कर पा रहे हैं जो उनके सामने खड़ी है, क्योंकि यह उनकी स्मृतियों वाली कैकेयी से बिलकुल भिन्न है।
