तस्य धर्मात्मनो देवि वनवासम् यशस्विनः ।
कथम् रोचयसे भीरु नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च ॥२-१२-२२॥
tasya dharmātmano devi vanavāsam yaśasvinaḥ । katham rocayase bhīru nava varṣāṇi pañca ca ॥2-12-22॥
Translation
O timid one, how can you approve of exile for fourteen (nine and five) years for that righteous and illustrious Rama?

हे भीरु! उस धर्मात्मा और यशस्वी राम के लिए तुम चौदह (नौ और पाँच) वर्षों का वनवास कैसे पसंद कर सकती हो?
English Commentary
Dasharatha focuses on the severity of the punishment and the innocence of the victim. He explicitly calculates the duration—fourteen years (nava varṣāṇi pañca ca)—highlighting the magnitude of the exile. He contrasts this harsh sentence with Rama's nature: righteous (dharmātmano) and illustrious (yaśasvinaḥ). By calling Kaikeyi bhīru (timid/shy), he ironically alludes to her usually gentle or hesitant nature regarding harsh actions, questioning how someone so sensitive could suddenly approve such a brutal fate for a faultless son.

यहाँ दशरथ समय की अवधि और राम के गुणों पर ध्यान केंद्रित करते हैं। 'नौ और पाँच' (नव वर्षाणि पञ्च च) अर्थात चौदह वर्ष—यह एक बहुत लंबी अवधि है, लगभग एक जीवनकाल के समान। राम 'धर्मात्मा' और 'यशस्वी' हैं, अर्थात उन्होंने कोई अपराध नहीं किया है। दशरथ कैकेयी को 'भीरु' (डरपोक/संकोची) कहते हैं, यह याद दिलाने के लिए कि वह तो स्वभाव से कोमल थी, उसे तो कठोर दंड देने में संकोच होना चाहिए। एक निर्दोष और गुणवान पुत्र को इतना कठोर दंड देना कैकेयी के स्वभाव के विपरीत होना चाहिए, यही दशरथ का तर्क है।
