अत्यन्तसुकुमारस्य तस्य धर्मे धृतात्मनः ।
कथम् रोचयसे वासमरण्ये भृशदारुणे ॥२-१२-२३॥
atyantasukumārasya tasya dharme dhṛtātmanaḥ । katham rocayase vāsamaraṇye bhṛśadāruṇe ॥2-12-23॥
Translation
He is extremely delicate/tender and his soul is dedicated to dharma. How can you approve of his living in the terribly harsh forest?

वह (राम) अत्यंत सुकुमार है और उसका मन धर्म में लगा रहता है। तुम उसे अत्यंत भयानक वन में भेजना कैसे पसंद करती हो?
English Commentary
Dasharatha draws a stark contrast between Rama's physical nature and the environment of the exile. Rama is described as atyanta-sukumārasya (extremely tender/delicate), having lived a life of royal comfort. Conversely, the forest is described as bhṛśa-dāruṇe (exceedingly harsh/terrifying). Dasharatha questions how Kaikeyi can send a soul so dedicated to dharma and so physically unaccustomed to hardship into such a dangerous environment. This verse emphasizes the King's protective instinct; he sees Rama not just as a successor, but as a delicate child ill-equipped for the brutality of the wild.

दशरथ यहाँ राम की शारीरिक कोमलता ('अत्यन्त सुकुमार') और वन की भयानकता ('भृश दारुणे अरण्ये') के बीच का विरोधाभास प्रस्तुत करते हैं। राम एक राजकुमार हैं, जिन्होंने कभी धूप-छांव का भी कष्ट नहीं सहा, वे वन के हिंसक पशुओं और कठिनाइयों का सामना कैसे करेंगे? साथ ही, राम 'धर्मे धृतात्मनः' हैं, यानी वे धर्म का पालन करने वाले हैं, योद्धा की तरह क्रूर नहीं। दशरथ का हृदय एक पिता के रूप में फट रहा है, जो अपने कोमल बच्चे को कांटों भरे रास्ते पर भेजने की कल्पना मात्र से सिहर उठता है।
