रोचयस्यभिरामस्य रामस्य शुभलोचने ।
तवशुश्रूषमाणस्य किम्मर्थम् विप्रवासनम् ॥२-१२-२४॥
rocayasyabhirāmasya rāmasya śubhalocane । tavaśuśrūṣamāṇasya kimmartham vipravāsanam ॥2-12-24॥
Translation
O beautiful-eyed one! For what purpose do you desire the banishment of Rama, who is delightful to all and who is ever engaged in your service?
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे शुभ नेत्रों वाली! जो राम सबके लिए आनंददायक (अभिराम) है और जो सदा तुम्हारी सेवा में लगा रहता है, तुम उसका निर्वासन (वनवास) किस प्रयोजन से चाहती हो?
English Commentary
Dasharatha addresses Kaikeyi as Shubhalochane (one with auspicious/beautiful eyes), which serves as an ironic contrast to the ugly ambition currently clouding her vision. He questions the logic behind banishing Rama, emphasizing two traits: he is Abhirama (delightful to all) and he is dedicated to her service (shuśrūṣamāṇasya). Dasharatha argues that punishing a son who serves his stepmother with such devotion is devoid of reason. He tries to make her realize that she is hurting the one person who has served her most faithfully, highlighting the moral bankruptcy of her demand.

दशरथ यहाँ कैकेयी को 'शुभलोचने' (सुंदर/शुभ नेत्रों वाली) संबोधित कर रहे हैं, जो एक तीखा व्यंग्य भी प्रतीत होता है—क्योंकि उसके नेत्रों में सुंदरता तो है, पर दृष्टि में क्रूरता आ गई है। राजा पूछते हैं कि राम, जिसका नाम ही 'अभिराम' (दूसरों को सुख देने वाला) है, उसे वन भेजने का क्या तुक है? विशेषकर तब, जब राम ने कभी सौतेली माँ होने का भेद नहीं माना और सदा कैकेयी की 'शुश्रूषा' (सेवा) की है। दशरथ यह जताना चाहते हैं कि सेवक या भक्त को दंड देना अन्याय है। वे कैकेयी के विवेक को जगाने के लिए राम के सेवा-भाव को ढाल बना रहे हैं।
