Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न स्मराम्यप्रियम् वाक्यम् लोकस्य प्रियवादिनः ।
स कथम् त्वत्कृते रामम् वक्ष्यामि प्रियमप्रियम् ॥२-१२-३२॥
na smarāmyapriyam vākyam lokasya priyavādinaḥ । sa katham tvatkṛte rāmam vakṣyāmi priyamapriyam ॥2-12-32॥
Translation
I do not recall any unpleasant word ever spoken by Rama, who speaks pleasantly to all the world. How then, for your sake, can I speak such a harsh and unpleasant thing to my beloved Rama?
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे याद नहीं आता कि उस 'लोकप्रियवादी' (सबको प्रिय बोलने वाले) राम ने कभी कोई कड़वा वचन कहा हो। ऐसे प्रिय राम को तुम्हारे लिए मैं यह अप्रिय बात (वनवास की आज्ञा) कैसे कहूँ?
English Commentary
This verse captures the agony of a father forced to deliver heartbreaking news to a gentle son. Dasharatha emphasizes that Rama is Priyavādinaḥ—he has never spoken harshly to anyone. The King finds it morally and emotionally impossible to reciprocate such gentleness with the harsh (apriyam) command of exile. Dasharatha expresses his inability to perform the task; he asks, "How can I?" The contrast between Rama's sweet speech and the bitter command Kaikeyi demands highlights the unnaturalness of the situation.

यह पिता की पीड़ा है जिसे अपने सबसे प्रिय पुत्र को मृत्यु-तुल्य समाचार सुनाना है। दशरथ कहते हैं कि राम ने आज तक किसी को दुख पहुंचाने वाली बात नहीं कही, तो ऐसे कोमल हृदय वाले को इतना कठोर आदेश देना दशरथ के लिए असंभव है। 'वक्ष्यामि' (मैं बोलूँगा) शब्द में राजा का संकोच और भय झलकता है। वे अपनी असमर्थता जता रहे हैं—कि जिस मुख ने हमेशा राम को आशीर्वाद दिया, वह मुख अब उसे वन जाने को कैसे कहे? यह कैकेयी के प्रति एक चुनौती है कि वह राजा से वह काम करवा रही है जो उनकी प्रकृति के विरुद्ध है।
